I’ve driven across this state more times than I can count with a camera bag in my trunk and a wedding on my calendar. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic coast, from vineyard estates in wine country to rooftop ballrooms in Richmond, Virginia is one of the most beautiful states in the country to get married in.
And I mean that. I’m not just saying it because it’s where I work.
Virginia has a rare combination of landscapes, architecture, and seasons that gives couples an enormous range of choices. The hard part isn’t finding a beautiful venue. The hard part is narrowing it down. So I put together this guide as a resource for couples who are in that early, overwhelming stage of venue research and want an honest opinion from someone who has actually photographed at these places.
This is not a sponsored list. These are the venues I genuinely love shooting at, broken down by region, with notes on what makes each one special from a photographer’s perspective.
Let’s get into it.
Virginia Beach and the Coastal Region
If you want the ocean as your backdrop, there is no better place in Virginia to get married than Virginia Beach. The light here is something special. Coastal air softens everything, golden hour lasts longer than it has any right to, and the Atlantic Ocean has a way of making every portrait feel cinematic without you even trying.
The Cavalier Resort, Virginia Beach
The Cavalier Resort is my number one recommended wedding venue in all of Virginia Beach, and honestly one of my favorites in the entire state. I’ve written a full breakdown of the Cavalier Resort that goes deep on every space, so I won’t repeat everything here. But the short version is this: it’s a historic hotel built in 1927, it sits one block from the Atlantic Ocean, and it has more stunning photo locations packed into one property than almost anywhere else I have worked.
You get the sunken courtyard for the ceremony, floor-to-ceiling windows flooding your reception rooms with natural light, a gorgeous outdoor patio and pool area, and then after the reception you walk one block to the beach and shoot golden hour portraits with the ocean behind you. That range is extraordinary and it’s why this venue tops my Virginia Beach list every single time.
Best for: Couples who want historic elegance, coastal beauty, and a variety of spaces all in one venue.
Lesner Inn, Virginia Beach
For a more intimate coastal wedding, Lesner Inn on the Lynnhaven Inlet is absolutely worth your attention. It’s smaller in scale than the Cavalier, which makes it feel warmer and more personal. The waterfront ceremony backdrop with boats drifting past on the inlet is genuinely beautiful, and at golden hour the water turns a rich burnished gold that photographs gorgeously.
If your guest list is under 150 and you want that relaxed coastal charm without the full resort price tag, Lesner Inn is one of the best value-for-beauty options in the region.
Best for: Intimate waterfront weddings with a laid-back coastal feel.
Richmond and Central Virginia
Richmond is having a moment. The city has evolved into one of the most interesting wedding markets in Virginia, with a mix of industrial-chic spaces, grand historic venues, and rooftop settings that give couples a genuinely urban, editorial feel. If you want your wedding to feel cool and a little unexpected, Richmond delivers.
The John Marshall Ballroom, Richmond
If you want classic old-world glamour in the heart of Richmond, the John Marshall Ballroom is as good as it gets. The ballroom itself is stunning, with ornate ceilings, warm lighting, and a grand scale that makes even a simple centerpiece look elegant. From a photography standpoint the interior architectural details here do a lot of the heavy lifting and I am always happy walking into this space.
Best for: Formal, black-tie weddings with a classic ballroom aesthetic.
The Tredegar Iron Works, Richmond
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Tredegar gives you industrial history in a beautiful outdoor setting along the James River. The brick walls, the riverfront backdrop, the mix of raw and refined make this one of the more visually interesting venues in central Virginia to photograph. Couples who want something with an edge rather than a traditional ballroom feel should absolutely look at Tredegar.
Best for: Couples who want an industrial-historic aesthetic with outdoor river views.
Maymont, Richmond
Maymont is one of those venues that surprises people who haven’t been there before. A 100-acre Victorian estate in the middle of Richmond, with formal gardens, a carriage house, and grounds that feel entirely removed from the city around them. The garden portraits here in late spring and early fall are some of the most beautiful I’ve taken in central Virginia. If outdoor garden romance is your vision, Maymont should be on your list.
Best for: Garden weddings, outdoor ceremonies, couples who love lush natural settings.
Northern Virginia and the DC Metro Area
Northern Virginia brings together two things that make for exceptional wedding photography: serious historic architecture and serious budgets to match. This region has some of the grandest estates in the entire state, and the proximity to DC means vendors and venues are accustomed to high expectations. The light and landscape here are different from coastal Virginia, more golden and rolling, especially as you move toward the hunt country and horse farm estates.
Goodstone Inn and Estate, Middleburg
Middleburg is Virginia horse country at its finest, and Goodstone Inn is the crown jewel of the area. Rolling green fields, stone cottages, mature trees, and a pastoral elegance that feels genuinely European. This is a venue where I could spend the entire day just wandering the grounds with a couple and never run out of beautiful frames. It’s intimate, it’s exclusive, and it photographs like a dream in every season.
Best for: Luxury intimate weddings for couples who love the countryside estate aesthetic.
Rust Manor House, Leesburg
A beautifully preserved historic manor surrounded by gardens and mature trees in Leesburg. The manor house itself creates a classic backdrop for portraits, and the grounds have enough variety to keep the visual story interesting throughout the day. This is a venue that rewards couples who appreciate understated elegance over flashy grandeur.
Best for: Classic, romantic weddings with a historic manor aesthetic.
The Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, McLean
For couples who want true luxury ballroom hospitality with flawless service, the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner is as polished as it gets in Northern Virginia. The event spaces are beautifully designed, the coordination team is exceptional, and the overall experience is one where every detail is handled. From a photography standpoint the interior spaces are sophisticated and well-lit. It’s a different kind of beautiful from the estate venues, but for the right couple it is absolutely perfect.
Best for: Large luxury weddings where flawless hospitality and service are the priority.
The Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains
If there is one region of Virginia that consistently takes my breath away, it is the Shenandoah Valley. The mountains, the farms, the golden light that rolls across the valley in the late afternoon. There is a reason so many couples travel from out of state to get married here. It is simply one of the most beautiful landscapes in the eastern United States.
Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards, North Garden
Pippin Hill sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville and it is one of those venues where every single frame you take looks like it was planned. The vineyard rows, the mountain backdrop, the rustic-elegant architecture of the barn and terrace spaces. I have photographed weddings here in spring, summer and fall and each season brings something entirely different and entirely stunning. This is a bucket list venue for me personally and I love every opportunity I get to shoot here.
Best for: Couples who want vineyard beauty, mountain views, and rustic-elegant architecture.
Stoneyman Cabin, Luray
For a more intimate mountain elopement or micro-wedding experience, the Shenandoah Valley near Luray offers some of the most dramatic landscape settings in Virginia. The overlooks, the valley views, the open sky above the Blue Ridge make for portraits that feel genuinely adventurous and emotional. If you’re considering an elopement or a very small gathering, this region deserves serious consideration.
Best for: Elopements, intimate ceremonies, adventurous couples who love dramatic landscapes.
Virginia Wine Country and Charlottesville
Charlottesville and the surrounding wine country sit in a sweet spot between the mountains and the piedmont, and the result is a landscape that is endlessly photogenic. Rolling hills, vineyards stretching to the horizon, historic estates with centuries of character. Thomas Jefferson built Monticello here for a reason. The light and the land in this region are extraordinary.
King Family Vineyards, Crozet
One of the most beloved wedding venues in the Charlottesville area for good reason. The vineyard setting with the Blue Ridge as a backdrop is genuinely world-class. The ceremony lawn, the mountain views, the rustic tasting room all combine into a visual story that flows naturally from morning to golden hour without ever feeling repetitive. This is a venue where the landscape does the heavy lifting and I simply follow the light.
Best for: Couples who want vineyard scenery, mountain backdrops, and a relaxed, elegant atmosphere.
Keswick Hall, Keswick
A restored luxury estate near Charlottesville that combines European grandeur with the warmth of Virginia countryside. Keswick Hall feels like a destination wedding without leaving the state. The interiors are extraordinary, the grounds are immaculate, and the overall experience is one of the most refined in the state. This is a venue for couples who want every detail to feel considered and elevated.
Best for: Luxury destination-style weddings with European estate aesthetics.
The Historic Triangle: Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown
This region carries more history per square mile than almost anywhere else in America, and that history translates into wedding venues that feel genuinely irreplaceable. Colonial architecture, brick courtyards, gardens designed in the 18th century. For couples who love history and want their venue to tell a story, this corner of Virginia is extraordinary.
Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg
Getting married in Colonial Williamsburg is unlike getting married anywhere else. The brick buildings, the cobblestone paths, the candlelit taverns and formal garden spaces create a visual atmosphere that is completely singular. I have photographed weddings here and the portraits you get in the historic district simply cannot be replicated anywhere else. It’s a living museum and it makes for unforgettable images.
Best for: History-loving couples who want a venue with genuine Colonial American character.
The Williamsburg Inn
One of the most elegant hotels in Virginia, the Williamsburg Inn combines classic American luxury with the history and charm of the colonial surroundings. The formal gardens, the beautifully appointed event spaces, and the impeccable service make this one of the top hospitality wedding experiences in the state. The grounds here offer portrait opportunities that feel timeless.
Best for: Classic luxury weddings with impeccable service and formal garden settings.
So How Do You Choose?
Here’s how I help couples think through the decision when they ask me.
Start with the feeling you want your wedding day to have. Not the aesthetic, the feeling. Do you want guests to walk in and feel like they’ve stepped back in time? Or like they’ve arrived at a modern luxury destination? Do you want the landscape to be the star of your photos, or the architecture? Do you want to be near the water, the mountains, or the city?
Once you know the feeling, the right region of Virginia tends to emerge pretty naturally. And once you have the region, the specific venue becomes a conversation about logistics, capacity, and budget.
As a photographer, the venues I return to most enthusiastically are the ones that give me variety throughout the day. Multiple spaces, different lighting conditions, a mix of indoor and outdoor options. The Cavalier Resort in Virginia Beach is the best example of this in the coastal region. Pippin Hill does it beautifully in wine country. Goodstone owns it in Northern Virginia.
If you’re specifically planning a Virginia Beach wedding, I’d point you to my detailed guide on the Cavalier Resort to start. And if you want to talk through any of the venues on this list, I’m always happy to share more from my experience shooting there.
Virginia is a stunning state to get married in. Wherever you choose, the backdrop is going to be beautiful. The goal is just to find the one that feels like you.
